There’s a Hole in My Face

I have a hole in my face and it’s dangerous. It feels like I’m endlessly cramming and pouring the worst trash into this hole. Chips, cookies, pizza, coffee, nicotine pouches, more chips, apple pie, ice cream, beer, more chips, burritos and margaritas. WTF is wrong with me? I know better, but can’t always demonstrate control. Some days I do better than others. Maybe you can relate.

The harsh truth is I’m engaged in a dangerous dance with addictive substances called 'food'. In a world where indulgence is easy and moderation is hard, understanding the power and responsibility of our dietary choices is critical. It's time I fully recognize that every time I eat or drink, I am either feeding disease or fighting it. This mouth of mine is not a garbage chute but rather a sacred gate, and what I allow through it should honor my body and health.

Whoa, that’s easy to say but very hard to do. Everywhere I go, businesses are pushing this junk like drug dealers. It’s quick money and they know how to wear me down. For instance, if I go into a coffee shop, I usually start strong. I can dodge the muffins, croissants, pies, cakes, Frenchie-palm things, bear claws, zucchini bread (aka cake), and the donuts. By the time I get to the register, I’m even a little proud. “Wow Russell, what a good boy, you’ve said ‘no’ to all those things.” But there, sitting right next to the register, some genius marketer has placed a basket of small brownies. Game over, I lose.

Yet, this isn't just about the struggle with food. It's a broader reflection on how we use the hole in our face – our mouths – as a conduit for fleeting pleasures, be it food, caffeine, alcohol, drugs, or any other substance. There’s a pattern here, a cycle of seeking immediate gratification through what we consume, often neglecting how it impacts us in the long run.

This realization calls for a shift in perspective. It's about becoming more mindful and intentional about what enters this sacred gate. Whether it's the brownie at the coffee shop, the extra drink at happy hour, or the mindless snacking in front of the TV, the question remains: how do I want to feel afterwards, not just in the moment but in the days and years to come?

It's about understanding that the choices we make through this hole in our face have a profound impact on our overall well-being. This isn't about stringent self-denial or living a joyless life devoid of treats. It's about striking a balance, making conscious choices that align with a vision of who we want to be and how we want to feel. It's recognizing that sometimes, saying 'no' to the immediate temptation is saying 'yes' to a healthier, happier self.

As we navigate a world brimming with temptations, staying mindful about our choices becomes a form of self-care. It's about being present in the moment, aware of our impulses, and making decisions that honor our bodies and minds. When we start being more intentional about what goes into our mouths, we begin to break the cycle of instant gratification. We start to build a lifestyle that’s not just about surviving the onslaught of temptations, but thriving amidst them.    ⚔️❤️
